Each Mercury system is comprised of one or more Mercury Interface Units (MIU) or Mercury USB adaptors (see Mercury options page). These devices, known as Mercury hosts, are equipped with up to 32 IP audio channels. IP audio channels are dynamically allocated to support two-way communications over an IP network. Multiple IP channels can be used simultaneously to conduct communications with any combination of other Mercury devices.
The MIU can be connected to multiple hardware or virtual control panels. It can then be used as a stand-alone intercom system without any further equipment being required. This arrangement is ideal for a single studio facility, OB vehicle or SNG truck. As the requirement grows, additional panels may be added up to a maximum of 32 on a single MIU. Multiple MIU’s can then be linked via IP to form larger integrated systems with a series of Mercury Intercoms or connecting larger Commander and Orator Digital Matrix Intercoms together.
All Mercury products are designed to operate with standards-based IT and network technologies - no special routers, switches or gateways are required. The system is scalable over LAN, WAN and broadband Internet using terrestrial or satellite-based IP network connectivity.
In a typical broadcast application customers would purchase an MIU and at least one Audio Expansion Board (AEB) fitted as this enables the connection of Mercury hardware panels and analogue audio inputs and outputs.

- Extends communications to other intercoms, belt packs, IFBs, and wireless headsets
- Send audio to public address systems and recording devices
- Receive audio from other sources including cameras, newsfeeds and wired and wireless beltpacks.
- Create audio trunks / tie-lines between sites
- Up to four AEBs can be fitted per Mercury Interface Unit
- Ideal for extending audio communications over IP
